Catalogage de “l’archive de jazz Walter Schätzlein”

Jazz has a home in Nuremberg – Jazz Studio Nuremberg, established 1954. And it had a mentor – Walter Schätzlein, Jazz aficionado, co-founder of the studio, and long-term director of the “Jazz Ost-West” festival. Due to his many personal contacts, he brought the greats of international Jazz to Nuremberg, while also promoting the careers of young talents by giving them the opportunity to perform at the Jazz Studio.

In 2015, Walter Schätzlein died at the age of 80. Only a few years before, he had bequeathed his private collection of CDs and LPs, of books and journals on the subject of Jazz, to the Nuremberg University of Music, where students now may use the “Walter Schätzlein Jazz Archive” as a reference collection in a separate room in the university library.

The resources in the collection were to be registered both locally – in the on-line catalog of the university library – and in the database of the Bavarian Library Network. GIMD performed the formal cataloging of the bibliographical data and the content-based cataloging of 5,800 CDs, 3,000 LPs, and 950 journals and magazines. In an “autopsy” process, as it is known in Documentation, original documents were assessed, and relevant information was captured and registered, e.g. names of performers, titles of LPs or CDs, titles of individual tracks on them, and the bibliographical data of the journals.

During processing, priorities were on the quality of registration, the allocation of unambiguous uniform titles, and the observation of pertinent regulations. Both the cataloging guidelines of the Library Network and RDA (Resource Description and Access) regulations applied. In addition, we had to check for duplicates: Was a certain CD or score in stock at another library of the Network? If so, the data had to be supplemented by an entry for this institution, and names of persons, choirs, or orchestras had to be linked – in Documentation, we call this “upcataloging”.
